Education is extremely important, no matter the subject. More individuals with mental illnesses need to speak up about their experiences. The more stories that are shared, the more people without mental illness can understand and sympathize. One article opening the mind of just one person is a win for mental health awareness.
I made this website to share my own stories about mental illness. There will be a main focus on Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). I may touch on depression at times, as well. Stigma surrounding these disorders is being slowly chipped away at. I want to do my part to break down the stigma even further.
Needing to organize your work desk or needing items to be symmetrical are usually not an indicator for OCD. You can’t be “so OCD”. This disorder isn’t an adjective, it’s a noun. OCD is a painful and torturous mental disorder that millions of people suffer from.
Being one of those suffering, offhand remarks about OCD makes my life harder. It makes it harder for me to speak up about my experiences. People will dismiss me and say “I know what you mean. I have to make sure my pencils are lined up or I go crazy!” That’s really not what OCD is about.
I lay awake for hours after getting into bed because I can’t stop my intrusive thoughts. I want to sit down but I have to wash my hands once more because I touched the doorknob and who knows what kinds of germs could be on there? My long sleeve shirts keep sliding down my chair to the point where the sleeve ends touch the floor slightly; and I have to put them in the laundry because it’s dirty now. There were many more examples I wrote out and erased because they deserve more than a sentence.
Point being, OCD is probably not what you are imagining it is. If you are someone reading this who also has OCD, know that you are not alone. There are treatments available and people that will support you. You can contact me anytime if you don’t have that support right now or need/want another ear, perspective, or advice.
I want this site to be open for discussion about mental health. The purpose above all is education, so ask any and as many questions that you’d like. I will try my best to answer them or redirect you to someone who can!
